 NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN FIRE PROTECTION

Presenter:  James Lynch,  Amped R&D

We are pleased to announce James Lynch as the presenter for our September meeting.  Mr. Lynch serves as the Director of R&D for the Fire Risk Alliance (FRA). For over 15 years, Mr. Lynch has amassed a broad range of experience in fire protection engineering, code consulting, fire research and product development. Mr. Lynch has extensive fire testing experience having conducted numerous test series for litigation purposes, the military and commercial products. These projects include the development and testing of a volume sensor for shipboard use, smoke characterization and smoke detector response studies for litigation, comparative testing of smoke detector technologies and UL and FM standardized testing for smoke detectors, optical flame detectors, and suppression systems.

This presentation will cover results from testing of new fire protection technologies. The first technology is a new deluge nozzle.  The design has improved water usage using a new spray characterization apparatus developed by Custom Spray Solutions at the University of Maryland Fire Protection Engineering program. The new nozzle has been designed to improve the throw of the nozzle, water distribution, droplet velocity, and droplet size for a specific application. The second technologies are water additive agents that have been field tested in the city of New York and the FDNY training facility the rock. One water additive is used on class C fires such as manholes, transformers, and switches. Results from Class C testing and manual operation leakage testing will be presented. The other water additive is used on deep seated fires and for flammable liquid fire suppression during manual and fixed system operations. The presentation will end with a new system for fighting confined space fires and a new form factor fire extinguisher that complies with ADA requirements.
